Telling your child about your pending divorce

Once you and your spouse have made the difficult decision to divorce in Virginia, you are faced with the harsh reality that you need to break the news to your children. This kind of extreme adjustment is often met with confusion, sadness and even anger from young children who do not yet understand what is happening. At Ferriswinder PLLC, we have been able to help many couples work through the legalities of divorce with an outcome that is beneficial for all parties.

According to Baby Center, your children can respond to the news of your divorce in many different ways including aggression and mischief. You may also notice that your children seem more clingy, insecure or uncooperative. These are all natural emotions and ways that children cope with sudden changes that may be difficult. When you recognize it is time to tell your children, here are some of the things you can do:

  • Be simple: Do not allow yourself to get too into detail about why you and your spouse are divorcing. Keep things simple and try to help your children understand that the change is a positive one.
  • Do not blame your spouse: Never point a finger of blame at your spouse. Your child still values you and your spouse as equals, and positive parental relationships with both parents is absolutely critical during this time.
  • Tell your children together: Arrange a time when both you and your spouse can sit down with your children and let them know of your decision together.
  • Find the appropriate time: Pick an appropriate time to tell your children about your decision. Choosing a good time can help reduce the stress and anxiety your children may feel about such a significant change.

By following these tips and being careful about the way you approach the topic of divorce with your children, you can begin to help your children cope in ways that are healthy and productive. For more information about family law, visit our web page.
